Support for Medical Students at IM Conferences

The University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine (UW DOM) offers scholarships to medical students who will be attending internal medicine conferences for the purposes of sharing their scholarly work, allowing them to explore a career in internal medicine. A limited number of scholarships are available each year and are awarded through a competitive selection process. Funding is capped at $1,500.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Conference early bird registration fee rates and plane tickets are paid for via the Department of Medicine directly. Hotels, meals and incidentals are paid for via personal funds, so students should be prepared to pay for these expenses upfront and will receive reimbursement after the conference.

Funding supports participation in the following meetings:

  • American College of Physicians (ACP) Annual Internal Medicine Meeting
  • Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Annual Meeting (regional and national)
  • Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Annual Conference (regional and national)
  • Other domestic conferences related to internal medicine at the discretion of the Vice Chair for Education

Funding Guidelines

The Department of Medicine will cover early bird registration fees and other reasonable travel and conference-related expenses up to $1,500. If funding is awarded, students will receive detailed guidance to ensure that all travel policies and reimbursement processes are followed.

Some groups offer funding to students to encourage attendance at regional and national meetings. Prior to applying for funding from the DOM, students should explore other funding sources unique to each conference. If funding is unavailable or additional costs are incurred, then request funding support by submitting the Medical Student Funding Request Form.

Submit the Medical Student Funding Request Form.

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis by a committee consisting of the Vice Chair for Education, the Director of the Phase 3 Curriculum, the Acute Care Assistant Block Leader, and the Director of Education.
  • Applications must be submitted at least 12 weeks before the conference to ensure scholarship recipients take advantage of early bird registration fees and lower airfare prices.
  • Applicants will be notified of funding decisions within 4 weeks of submission.

To prepare for submission, you can review this PDF [Box file] of the questions on the funding request form.

Post-Conference Requirements
