Customized Training for the Career You Want
From an orientation bootcamp through state-of-the-art simulation to board prep training, our robust curriculum gives you the experiences you need for the career you want.
Didactic Experiences
Here are examples of the our didactic experiences:
- A month-long bootcamp that includes peer shadowing, a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) session at the University of Iowa, bronchoscopy training at the Mayo Clinic and advanced airway management training
- Weekly conferences on such topics as lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, transplantation, ventilator management, POCUS and board review
- Hands-on sessions with respiratory therapists and radiologists
- Meetings with faculty to learn about active research and clinical trials, in preparation for research participation
Fellows attend and present at these didactic conferences throughout the year.
Our research curriculum includes monthly mentor meetings and quarterly research committee meetings.
Clinical Experiences
Distinctive clinical experiences include:
- Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. This Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-accredited clinic has approximately 800 patient visits each year. Faculty lead clinical trials as part of the national CFF Therapeutics Development Network, and fellows can participate in investigator-initiated projects.
- Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic. One of 60 Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Centers nationwide, this clinic's participation in clinical trials has led to FDA-approved anti-fibrotic medications for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and progressive fibrotic lung disease.
- Lung Transplant Clinic and ALD-Transplant inpatient rotation. Our robust lung transplant program—a Center of Excellence—cares for patients all over Wisconsin, the region and the nation. We perform 40 to 50 transplants per year, which gives fellows ample opportunity to be involved in patient selection, pre-transplant management and post-transplant care. Fellows can also participate in quality improvement or research projects, and educational experiences in lung transplant and donor education.
- Interventional pulmonary procedures. Choose the IP elective and participate in the 20 to 40 procedures performed each week in our IP clinic.
- Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic. This clinic is accredited by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) as a Pulmonary Hypertension Comprehensive Care Center (PHCCC). We also participate in the Pulmonary Hypertension Association Registry and are one of the top enrolling centers for clinical trial participants.
- Unique electives. Options include neuro critical care, sleep medicine, interventional pulmonary, echocardiography, cardiac critical care, Med Flight, cardiothoracic critical care, and burn/trauma unit.
Fellows spend six to nine months each year on clinical activities, with the remainder of the fellowship devoted to scientific investigation in an area of interest.
Scholarly Activity
Each fellow actively participates in a research project during the three years of training. We offer an optional fourth year for fellows specifically interested in research and academic training.
Fellows teach internal medicine residents and fourth-year medical students who rotate on the ICU and pulmonary consult services.
Additional Opportunities in the Department
- QI Curriculum for Fellowship. Teaches fellows how to apply quality improvement knowledge and skills directly to clinical practice.
- Women in Leadership and Development (WILD). Trainee-led program that provides women fellows with a toolkit for career advancement and skills to negate systemic gender bias and inequities in academic medicine.
