Dynamic workshops and talks take the stage at 2017 Department of Medicine Education Day
Approximately 30 educators gathered on February 24, 2017 for the second annual Department of Medicine Education Day. The half-day event brought together faculty leaders focused on medical school education, graduate medical education (residency, fellowship, and other post-graduate programs), staff members within and outside of the Department of Medicine, including colleagues from the Department of Instructional Technology (DoIT) and the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.
The day began with the inaugural “Education Now” Grand Rounds, which included back-to-back talks by faculty members conducting research supported by Department of Medicine Education Innovation Grants. The speakers were Christine Kolehmainen, MD, clinical adjunct assistant professor, Thomas Shiffler, MD, clinical assistant professor, and David Feldstein, MD, associate professor (CHS), all of General Internal Medicine.
Following this, attendees participated in interactive workshops devoted to topics such as providing effective feedback to learners in written form, conducting educational research, teaching “intangible” skills to residents, improving the learning environment, integrating wellness into work life, and using technology in the learning environment.
“Our second Department of Medicine Education Day was a success!,” exclaimed Laura Zakowski, MD, associate professor (CHS), General Internal Medicine and associate vice chair for undergraduate medical education. “We brought together educators from across our department to hear about educational innovations, practical teaching strategies and upcoming medical school curricular changes. I am grateful to the many participants whose willingness to both learn and converse about education made this an event worth repeating next year.”
