Dr. Laura Zakowski is a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine and serves as Vice Chair of Education. Dr. Zakowski actively teaches and pursues research in resident and medical student education. She is the Integrated Block Leader, Acute Care in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. Recognized as an excellent clinical educator, she is invited to present her research regularly at both national and regional meetings. In recognition of her outstanding work, Dr. Zakowski has received the Distinguished Internist of the Year from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American College of Physicians and the Ruth Marie E. Fincher, MD, Service Award, from the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine.
In the classroom, clinic and hospital, Dr. Zakowski teaches students and residents in addition to maintaining an active medical practice at the UW–East Clinic where she sees patients with general medical problems. Throughout her career, Dr. Zakowski has received numerous humanism awards for her exceptional compassion in patient care. Dr. Zakowski is board certified in Internal Medicine and has been named to the Best Doctors in America list multiple times.

Dr. Zakowski’s published educational research ranges from surveying graduates of general medicine fellowships to finding effective methods to teach knowledge, skills and attitudes to small groups of students from faculty and student assessments. Currently, she is investigating innovative approaches to teaching fundamental communication, evidence-based medicine, and behavioral modification skills to students.
