Faculty and learners proudly represent UW at the 2024 ACP-Wisconsin meeting
In keeping with a tradition of excellence, the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine (DOM) had an outstanding showing at the 2024 American College of Physicians Wisconsin (ACP-WI) Chapter Scientific Meeting in Wisconsin Dells on September 6 and 7.
Faculty awards
Farah Kaiksow, MD, MPP, assistant professor, Hospital Medicine, received the 2024 Early Career Internist of the Year Award, which recognizes the outstanding contributions of an early career internist in clinical practice, research and/or medical education.
Jennifer Woodard, MD, clinical assistant professor, Hospital Medicine and Geriatrics and Gerontology, and David Deemer, MD, MS, internal medicine residency alum, were each awarded a 2024 Resident of the Year Award, which recognize outstanding contributions of a resident at one of Wisconsin’s five internal medicine residency programs in the areas of clinical care, advocacy, teaching, mentoring or research.
Mara Terras, MD, clinical associate professor, General Internal Medicine, was awarded the 2024 Volunteerism and Community Service Award, which recognizes the work and raises the awareness of members who are significantly involved in volunteerism and community service activities.
Resident awards and presentations
Daniel Wilcockson, MD, MPH, PG-3, won 1st place in the oral research presentation competition for his project “Comparative Evaluation of Various Artificial Intelligence Chatbots for Management of Common Internal Medicine Conditions.”
Zahraa Qamhieh, MMS, PG-2, received runner-up in the oral vignette competition for her presentation “Adult-Onset Still’s Disease Complicated by Macrophage Activation Syndrome,” while Akin Iyeku, MD, MS, PG-2, received runner-up in the poster case competition for “Double Trouble: Myocardial Infarction with Takotsubo Syndrome.”
Daniel Pastan, MD, PG-2, won the Narrative Medicine Competition for his poem “Night Call.”
In total, 17 residents presented posters at the conference:

- Emily Schmitz, MD, MPH, PG-2, presented “Walking Breathless: A case of PFO-associated platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome”
- Samantha Shapiro, MD, PG-2, presented “A rare case of diabetic myonecrosis in a patient with acute, atraumatic thigh pain” and “A case of occult prostate cancer with unusual presentation of bicytopenia and hypoxia, with isolated metastasis to the bone marrow and initial concern for possible microscopic tumor embolization”
- Dalia Sriwi, MBBS, PG-3, presented “Hashimoto’s Encephalopathy in a Young Adult: Case Report”
- Bradley Uyemura, MD, PG-3, presented “Uveitis Masquerade: A Case of Primary Vitreoretinal Lymphoma”
- Divya Vundamati, MD, PG-3, presented “A curious case of rapidly progressive ascending mixed sensory and motor neuropathy”
Haley Probst, MD, Trowbridge Endowed General Internal Medicine Chief Resident, co-led the Thieves Market Case Discussion as a plenary session as well.

- Paul Bergl, MD, clinical assistant adjunct professor, co-presented “Exploring through the Sonic Waves: POCUS for Residents”
- Victoria Gillet, MD, clinical assistant adjunct professor, presented “Protecting Health in a Warming World: Patient Education Strategies”
- Blair Golden, MD, assistant professor, Hospital Medicine, co-presented an “Update on the Diagnosis and Management of Delirium” with division chief Ed Vasilevskis, MD, MPH, who also moderated the Doctor’s Dilemma Competition
- Dr. Kaiksow presented “Health Care Implications of the Rapidly Aging Incarcerated Population” and moderated the Medical Student and Resident Oral Presentations
- Samantha Murray-Bainer, MD, assistant professor, Hospital Medicine, presented the “Update on Hospital Medicine – Greatest Hits”
- Samantha Pabich, MD, MPH, clinical assistant adjunct professor, provided an “Obesity Management Update”
- Andrea Schnell, MD, clinical associate professor, General Internal Medicine, and director of residency diversity, equity and inclusion, presented “Diagnostic Excellence: Moving from Race-Based to Race-Conscious Care”
