Kara Westmas is academic staff in the Department of Medicine as part of Graduate Medical Education. After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Kara began an antiracism learning group for fellowship coordinators in the Department of Medicine. Since then, the group expanded to offer this learning opportunity to ~10 Graduate Medical Education program coordinators across University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, meeting on a biweekly basis. The group offers protected time for critical reflection on important concepts as part of a journey towards antiracism. Subtopics of antiracism include police brutality for minorities, intersectionality, white privilege and identity, white supremacy culture, and more. Kara is most passionate about wellbeing, antiracism, and leadership development, especially for the GME coordinator.
