Dr. Adnan Said is a faculty member in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology within the Department of Medicine and is Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (VAH). He also serves as Medical Director of the VA Liver Transplant Program, and Liver Transplant and Hepatitis Liaison at the VAH. Dr. Said is involved in medical education and is the Program Director of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship where he oversees curriculum development and program accreditation. Dr. Said has been named multiple times to the Best Doctors in America list for his clinical work and is a three-time recipient of the Outstanding Clinical Educator Award, Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is member of the executive committee of the National Medical Advisory Board of the American Liver Foundation and chair of the Wisconsin Chapter of the Medical Advisory Committee, American Liver Foundation, and Associate Editor of Clinical Liver Disease. Dr. Said has served on the Clinical Guidelines Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the Finance committee and Public Policy Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and currently on the Clinical Research Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and is a fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). He also serves on the Education Subcommittee of the Liver Intestinal Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation He has served on the University of Wisconsin Finance committee and Compensation Development Committee as well as the University Health Sciences IRB.
Dr. Said’s clinical practice is devoted to advanced hepatology (e.g., diseases of the liver) including Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD, previously called Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) and liver transplantation, and he is a member of UW Health's Digestive Health Services team. He serves as director of the Multidisciplinary Metabolic Liver Health Clinic of UW Health At the Digestive Health Center.

Dr. Said's research focuses on advanced liver disease, particularly on the growing epidemic of metabolic dysfunction associated steatosis liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and metabolic syndrome. He is also involved in biomarker and screening trials for liver cancer as well as in development of noninvasive technologies in fatty liver disease and portal hypertension. His research is supported by NIH and VA grants as well as industry and Foundation support. Dr. Said has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 20 book chapters.
