UW Department of Medicine climbs to 18th in nation for NIH funding
The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR), which is a clearinghouse of information about research funding to medical institutions from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), released their 2016 rankings of medical schools and departments. The University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine has climbed to 18th in the nation in the category "Clinical Science Department - Internal Medicine."
This rank, which has climbed steadily over the past four years, is based on $67,561,757 in NIH awards credited to the department in federal fiscal year 2016.
This is the second year in a row that the department has been ranked in among the top 20 departments of internal medicine in the United States since BRIMR began tracking trends in 2006. Rankings for fiscal year 2016 are based on direct plus indirect costs, excluding research and development (R&D) contracts and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) awards.
”Our department ranking, based on NIH funding, is a reflection of the hard work of many people, and of the excellence of their research.” said Richard Page, MD, George R. and Elaine Love Professor and chair, Department of Medicine.
NIH funding for medical research in the state of Wisconsin as a whole was 16th in the nation (up one place from 2015), with a total of $421.8 M in NIH funding for a state population of 5,757,564. This amounts to $73.26 per capita.
