New faculty Q&A with Jane Pearson, MD
Jane Pearson, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor
Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
What is your primary professional focus in any or all of our mission areas?
My clinical focus is comprehensive cardiovascular health, advanced hypertension, dyslipidemia/cholesterol disorders and cardiac rehabilitation. I see patients for both primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. My patient visits include both pharmacological (medication) and lifestyle (diet and exercise) prescriptions.
What drew you to UW-Madison and the Department of Medicine?
The UW Preventive Cardiology Program was the first academic program in the nation (1973)—truly “a department before its time”. I am honored to be a part of this pioneering team of experts.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am very excited to work among peers who share my passion for prevention. Our team of nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, dietician and exercise physiologists has expertise in advanced hypertension, complex dyslipidemias, and lifestyle treatments to provide the best cardiovascular outcomes for our patients. I also enjoy working with many different types of patients who often travel from all over the Midwest, and who challenge my clinical skills and teach me new things every day!
What do you enjoy when you're not working?
I am the same person at home as I am at work and am proud to say that I really do “walk the walk”. My favorite hobbies are outdoor activities, especially hiking the Ice Age Trail and the Colorado Rockies, and biking. I also spend a lot of time cooking healthy and usually vegetarian dishes, reading and I aim to learn at least 1 new thing or 1 new word every day.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” and “If you listen carefully to your patients, they will tell you their diagnosis.”
