New faculty Q&A with Iliya Amaza, MBBS
Iliya Amaza, MBBS
Clinical Assistant Professor
Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
What is your primary professional focus in any or all of our mission areas (clinical, research, and/or medical education)?
I still have a fairly broad focus as I enjoy practicing across the broad spectrum of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine with particular clinical interests in obstructive lung diseases and lung cancer. I am also interested in Global Health and I look forward to developing a niche in Global Pulmonary Health.
What drew you to UW-Madison and the Department of Medicine?
My wife is from Madison and I enjoyed my time as an MPH student, and later as a research staff, at UW-Madison. As a resident, I also had meaningful interactions with the members of the Department of Medicine. Therefore, coming back to the University was a natural choice for me.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
Availing myself of teaching opportunities, forging new relationships, and leveraging existing opportunities for collaboration across campus.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Hanging out with my 3 girls and biking. I also love to travel and looking forward to visiting new destinations in a post-COVID world.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
“Better is possible. It does not take genius. It takes diligence. It takes moral clarity. It takes ingenuity. And above all, it takes a willingness to try.”
