New faculty Q&A: Dr. Melissa Allan
Melissa Allan, MD
Visiting Associate Professor
General Internal Medicine
What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My focus is excellent outpatient internal medicine. I pride myself on getting to know my patients well which enables us to work together to improve their health.
What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
I chose UW as it’s an organization that puts an emphasis on excellent primary care with involved General Internal Medicine leadership.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am excited about establishing close relationships with my new patient panel and learning what all the vast subspecialties have to offer. The learning opportunities are immense which is very inspiring.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Outside of work, I love to sew (apparel and bags) and I also need to get my daily exercise in to feel energized.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
A mentor once told me to “Learn one new thing every day.” I think about this daily. Early in my career I focused more on applying that advice to medical education but now its sprinkled in with all aspects of learning.
