New faculty Q&A: Dr. Justin Massey

Dr. Justin Massey

Justin Massey, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor
Infectious Disease

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My focus is a combination of clinical infectious disease and research into difficult-to-treat fungal biofilm infections.

What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
Ever since I was a medical student at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), I have been drawn to the department for the kindness of faculty and their openness to teaching combined with their dedication to excellent patient care. Further, I have been continually impressed with the multifaceted, high-impact research in both clinical and basic science.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am excited to complete some very exciting research projects this year as well as utilize my infectious disease fellowship training to make independent clinical decisions.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
When not working, I enjoy trail running, hiking, and cooking.

Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
One of my favorite pieces of advice that I have taken to heart, was from a mentor in ID fellowship training, who advised that no matter what is happening outside of a patient’s room, when you are in the room with a patient, you give them one hundred percent of your attention.
