New faculty Q&A: Dr. Jackson Musuuza
Jackson Musuuza, MBBS, PhD, MPH, MS
Assistant Professor
Hospital Medicine
What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My primary professional focus is twofold: providing clinical care as a hospitalist at both the University Hospital and East Madison Hospital, and conducting clinical research with special interests in de-implementation of low-value care and optimization of high-value care.
What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
Having recently completed internal medicine residency training, I sought a department that would allow me to combine clinical care with research. UW–Madison's Department of Medicine, with its strong track record, was the ideal choice for me. Prior to joining residency in 2021, I had spent about nine years in Madison, including graduate school years and five years as a research health scientist at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (Madison VA), and an associate research specialist in the Department of Medicine. I built strong connections with mentors and colleagues and always looked forward to the opportunity to join as a faculty member.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am excited about the opportunity to connect with patients and their families at the bedside; it’s a great privilege to care for someone during their vulnerable times. In addition, I look forward to collaborating with colleagues to discover new research questions and identify areas for improvement, as well as starting new research projects.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Outside of work, I enjoy jogging and running year-round. During the winter, I layer up and hit the road. I also love spending time with family and friends.
