The Department of Medicine notes with sorrow the passing of Lawrence "Larry" Fleming, MD, MBA, who died on August 30, 2017. Dr. Fleming was a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine from 1989 to 2012.  

After completing his undergraduate degree, medical degree, and residency at the University of Maryland, Dr. Fleming served as flight surgeon for the US Army. He returned to the University of Maryland as chief resident after his military service concluded. Dr. Fleming was in private practice for several years in Rochester, New York prior to moving to Madison.

He was the first medical director of U-Care, which later became Unity HMO, and served a 35-year-long career at UW Hospital and Clinics. In 2010, he was selected by the Department of Medicine for the "Internist's Internist" award in recognition of clinical excellence.
