Making an impact at 2018 national conferences: SHM and SGIM
Springtime is often annual conference season for medical professional societies. Over the past several weeks, members and trainees in the department have been traveling to share the results of their scholarly work with others in their disciplines. Two such meetings included the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) conference on April 8-11, 2018 in Orlando, Florida and the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) conference on April 11-14, 2018 in Denver, Colorado.
Three members of the Division of Hospital Medicine presented at SHM 2018. Ann Sheehy, MD, MS, associate professor and head of the division, delivered a talk entitled “I Want to Be 'Part of Your [Inpatient] World': Perspectives and Solutions for the Elimination of Observation Care.” Sean O'Neill, MD, clinical assistant professor, presented a poster entitled "An Interdisciplinary Approach to Resident Quality Improvement in the Inpatient Clinical Microsystem." An honorable mention award was presented to Casey Ray, RN, NP, nurse practitioner and advanced practice provider supervisor, for a poster she presented entitled, "The Healthcare Hug: Utilizing the Readmission Review Team While Expanding the Continuum of Care."
Meanwhile, over in the Rocky Mountains, internal medicine residents presented their work at SGIM 2018. Trainees who presented their work included second-year residents Will Bringgold, MD, MS; Brittany Galusha, MD; Andrew Lang, MD; Kristina Little, MD; and Rachna Unnithan, MD, and chief resident Peter Kleinschmidt, MD. A list of titles and authors is below.
Mentors were beaming with pride, including Joan Addington-White, MD, clinical professor and Internal Medicine residency program associate program director and primary care track director. "I was so proud of all of our residents! They did a great job,” said Dr. Addington-White.
Several other faculty members from the Division of General Internal Medicine also attended and presented at SGIM 2018, including Jeremy Smith, MD, associate professor (CHS), who presented a talk entitled, "Wait, You Mean I Have to Leave the Conference Room?!?! Teaching with the Patient Present.”
