Get to know new Chief Resident Dr. Michael Houghan
Michael Houghan, MD
Trowbridge Endowed Primary Care Chief Resident
Medical school: University of Toledo College of Medicine
What does being a chief resident mean to you?
I am honored to be able to act as the primary care chief resident for the next academic year. This opportunity will allow me to grow into the academic general internist and clinician educator that I hope to become. Also, I will use this time to think critically about how our primary care residents provide care, how they are taught the skills they need to be independent practitioners, and how we can make their education better. I hope to live up to legacy of the great leaders and clinicians who had the role before me: Drs. Nadia Sweet, Emily Owen and Victoria Gillet.
What are you most looking forward to as chief?
As the primary care track chief resident, I will be mainly working and learning alongside the primary care track residents, who are some of the most intelligent, practical, and conscientious folks I've ever worked with. I am eager to build my skills as both a clinician and an educator -- both roles that I still have much to learn about. Additionally, I know that this year will come with challenges when it comes to supporting both learners and the program, and I am excited to work closely with my incoming co-chiefs to find creative solutions.
What’s your favorite part of the UW internal medicine residency?
I love that our program packs the one-two punch of providing outstanding clinical training while also still feeling like a supportive and inclusive environment. Our residents care deeply about the well-being of one another which I think makes our program one of the strongest in the country. I look forward to fostering this continued growth next year as a chief.
