Faculty, residents, and students recognized at the 2017 Wisconsin American College of Physicians meeting
In an impressive demonstration of collaborative medical prowess, faculty members and trainees with the Department of Medicine were recognized during the 2017 Wisconsin American College of Physicians (ACP) Conference in the Wisconsin Dells on September 8-9.
Fourteen residents and six medical students participated in the Oral and Poster Case Vignette competitions. Matt Brunner, MD, internal medicine resident, received first place for his Oral Research Vignette entitled “Fluoroquinolone Restriction Decreases Rates of Clostridium difficile: Results of a Mixed-Methods Study” and Yaoli Yang, MD, internal medicine resident, received first place for her Poster Vignette entitled “When Pulse Oximetry Lies.”
A team (pictured at right) comprised of residents Matt Brunner, MD, Jesse Maupin, MD, and Sam Murray-Bainer, MD also won the Scott Sprtel Doctor’s Dilemma Jeopardy Competition. The trio will represent the Wisconsin ACP Chapter at the 2018 National ACP Conference in New Orleans.
Additionally, three faculty members (pictured at right) were selected for awards in recognition of clinical excellence.
Elizabeth Trowbridge, MD, clinical professor and head, General Internal Medicine and Philip August and Sarah Neely Herrmann Professor in General Internal Medicine, was named Helen Dickie Woman Physician of the Year.
"It is absolutely fitting that Dr. Trowbridge was selected for this award, which was named for former Department of Medicine pioneer Dr. Helen Dickie," said Richard Page, MD, George R. and Elaine Love Professor and chair, Department of Medicine.
The Young Internist of the Year Award was presented to Sean O'Neill, MD, clinical assistant professor, Hospital Medicine. Dr. O'Neill serves as physician lead for UW's main teaching ward and co-chairs the ward's quality improvement steering committee as well as the ACP-Wisconsin Hospitalist Committee, among others.
A comment from a resident studying under his guidance stated, "Dr. O'Neill gave the team complete autonomy and is an excellent and enthusiastic teacher. His emphasis on communication to hospital staff, patients, families, and primary care providers is over the top."
A Community-Based Physician and Mentor Award, which recognizes outstanding community-based practitioners of internal medicine who demonstrate commitment to mentoring the next generation of physicians, was presented to Amy Muchow, MD, clinical assistant professor, General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Muchow began a comprehensive internal medicine practice at the UW Health Internal Medicine Clinic in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 2006. In addition to her full-time practice, Dr. Muchow provides consultative services in hospice and palliative care, serves as medical director for nursing homes in Dodge County, and has served as a preceptor for fourth-year medical students in UW School of Medicine and Public Health for over a decade.
