Dr. Dawn Davis speaks on diabetes, life in academic medicine
Dawn Belt Davis, MD, PhD, associate professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism served as panelist and career mentor at the University of Chicago Medical Scientist Training Program 50th Anniversary Reunion and Retreat in Chicago, Illinois and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on June 23-25, 2017.
The event was attended by current MD/PhD students and alumni, who heard Dr. Davis' perspective about challenges for women in medicine, work/life balance, academic research careers, and balancing clinical and research responsibilities.
Additionally, Dr. Davis offered a teaching session at Centro Hispano in Madison, Wisconsin on July 13, 2017. The session on diabetes treatment and prevention was designed for women preparing to be community health workers in the Hispanic community.
Dr. Davis was accompanied by Cheri Gangstad, RN, CDE, UW Health West Diabetes clinic and Joseph Blumer, research intern in Dr. Davis' lab. Mr. Blumer also volunteers for Centro Hispano's farmer's market and is an aspiring medical student.
Attendees of the session had the opportunity to test their own blood glucose levels and learn about diabetes management.
