Dr. Amish Raval trains emergency responders in Juneau and Sauk Counties
A group of emergency personnel from Juneau and Sauk Counties met at Mauston Area Emergency Medical Services on April 26, 2018 for training on responding to ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a profoundly life-threatening medical emergency caused by the complete blockage of a cardiac artery.
First responders participated in simulations and participated in training activities about medications for treatment of STEMI in the field, aspproaches to difficult IV access, STEMI benchmarks, and STEMI mimics.
Amish Raval, MD (pictured at right), associate professor, Cardiovascular Medicine, gave a lecture on the deployment of stents and the best mode of entry for different situations and patients.
“There’s a couple of scenarios where we will go through the groin, but in most cases we will go through the wrist,” he explained.
Dr. Raval was joined by UW Health STEMI coordinator Amy Shepard, RN, and UW Health MedFlight nurse Kim Maerz, RN.
