Shobhina G. Chheda, MD, MPH, FACP, professor (CHS), General Internal Medicine, and associate dean for medical education at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, was one of four faculty members from across the nation invited by the American College of Physicians (ACP) to lead a three-day faculty development program for teaching physicians and other healthcare providers in Bangkok, Thailand, in November 2019.

ACP provided the program at the request of Professor Chirayu Auewarakul, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Public Health and vice-principal of research and international relations at HRH Princess Chulabhorn College of Medical Science in Bangkok.

Joining Dr. Chheda were ACP faculty Jack Ende, MD, MACP (University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine); David Hilden, MD, MPH, FACP (Hennepin County Medical Center); and Suja Mathew, FACP (Cook County Health & Hospitals System).

The four faculty members presented nine modules over three days: Competency Evaluation, Engaging Your Learners, Feedback, Teaching in the Office, Teaching in the Hospital, Teaching in Small Groups, Teaching Clinical Reasoning, and Encouraging Professionalism. In the final module, each faculty member shared their most memorable moment either as a teacher or learner, and encouraged participants to do likewise.  

Local educators facilitated the workshops, while ACP faculty circulated and assisted participants as they worked through cases and exercises. Total attendance was 109 participants.

The program in Thailand was the tenth iteration of ACP’s International Faculty Development Course, organized by the Office of Global Engagement. These programs have become a source of pride for the College, an exciting experience for ACP members who serve as faculty, and a source of enrichment and learning for those who attend.
