Lisa Strate, MD, MPH, has joined the Department of Medicine as the new chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. Strate comes to us from the University of Washington in Seattle, where she was a professor of medicine and the section chief of gastroenterology at Harborview Medical Center.

Her clinical and research interests focus on the prevention and management of diverticulitis. She is internationally recognized for her National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research on the epidemiology and treatment of diverticular disease. Her work has changed dietary recommendations, informed clinical guidelines, and served as the basis for current theories of disease pathogenesis.

She is an associate editor for Clinical Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology, serves on several national gastroenterology society committees, and is a former member of the NIH Kidney, Nutrition, Obesity, and Diabetes (KNOD), and Kidney, Endocrine, and Digestive Disorders (KEDD) study sections.

She earned her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and her master’s in public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“I’m incredibly honored to join the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and the Department of Medicine,” Dr. Strate says. “It’s a delight to join an academic community that sets itself apart with exceptional research, clinical and training programs, as well as a tradition of kindness, collegiality and collaboration.”
