Musculoskeletal Aging and Metabolism
Adam Konopka, PhD, MS, leads the Musculoskeletal Aging & Metabolism Laboratory, which uses a translational research approach to understand the mechanisms involved in the onset and treatment of aging and age-related diseases.
Age-Related Loss of Skeletal Muscle Health and Osteoarthritis
Dr. Konopka's research takes findings in basic science models, such as tissue culture and rodent models, and applies them to non-human primates and human clinical trials.
His team is currently investigating how skeletal muscle mitochondrial bioenergetics and remodeling mediate aging and the healthspan-extending effects of exercise and/or metformin. They are also interested in understanding how the mTOR signaling pathway is involved in the initiation and treatment of osteoarthritis.
