Professional Activities

Dr. Piper is a Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine. She is a UW Chair for Tobacco Research and Intervention Research Professor and a co-director of research at the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI).

Dr. Piper served as associate editor of Nicotine & Tobacco Research for seven years, is a peer reviewer for 20 peer-reviewed journals, and is chair of the NIH Interventions to Prevent and Treat Addictions Study Section. She is a member of the Society for Research in Nicotine and Tobacco, the Association for Psychological Science, the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, and the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence. In 2020, she was elected President of the International Society for Research in Nicotine and Tobacco.

Clinical Specialties

Dr. Piper’s clinical interests include psychotherapy and behavioral psychology. In her practice she works with patients with mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

Dr. Piper’s NIH-funded research focuses on understanding and treating tobacco dependence, with an additional interest in health equity. Her research includes helping smokers quit as well as understanding dependence on novel tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).
