Dr. Danielle McCarthy is a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine. She is a UW Chair for Tobacco Research and Intervention Research Professor, as well as the Director of Implementation and Health System Research at the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW–CTRI). As a licensed psychologist, Dr. McCarthy provides psychotherapy to adult patients at UW Health Junction Rd Internal Medicine. She is also a member of the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Office on Smoking and Health has recognized Dr. McCarthy as an expert consultant. She is a member of the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, and the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology. Dr. McCarthy is a deputy editor of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. She has taught medical students about tobacco withdrawal and serves as research mentor for students and trainees.
Dr. McCarthy’s clinical interests include depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders and tobacco use.

Dr. McCarthy leads a program of research focused on the development and refinement of treatments to help people stop smoking cigarettes. As part of this research program, she studies the psychological changes that people experience leading up to and during an attempt to quit smoking and ways in which treatments do (or do not) affect these experiences. Her research has received funding from agencies including the National Institutes of Health (the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse).
