Dr. Toby Campbell is a thoracic medical oncologist in the Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care. He is UW Health Chief of Palliative Care and holds the Ellen and Peter O. Johnson Chair in Palliative Care. He served as the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Director from 2010 to 2017, developing the program into a national program of excellence. Under his leadership, the UW Health Palliative Care Program received a 2017 Citation of Honor from the American Hospital Association’s Circle of Life program for its innovative palliative care. Honors awarded to Dr. Campbell include the 2014 Sojourns Scholar Leadership Award from the Cambia Foundation and Young Investigator Awards from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, respectively.
Dr. Campbell’s clinical practice interests include lung cancer, symptom management, communication, and palliative care.
Dr. Campbell’s research interests are in communication education, empathy, high-risk shared decision-making, and models of care for palliative care implementation. His work on communication crosses a variety of disciplines and he has published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Intensive Care Medicine, Patient Education and Counseling, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and the Journal of Oncology Practice, among others.
