Dr. Christie Bartels is chief of the Division of Rheumatology within the Department of Medicine. She seeks to reduce disparities and improve the cardiovascular health and longevity of patients with inflammatory diseases. She is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and a member of the American College of Physicians (ACP). Dr. Bartels has received the Puestow Research Award by the UW Department of Medicine, a Community Impact Leadership Award by the Arthritis Foundation, two UW Health Patient Experience Awards, and has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Madison for Rheumatology multiple times.
She serves as study section member for the Rheumatology Research Foundation and as an ad hoc reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Bartels is a member of the ACR Committees on Collaborative Initiatives and RHIT Publications, a lupus advisor to the National Quality Forum, and a member of the scientific advisory council for Lupus Foundation of America. She teaches rheumatology topics in the classroom and clinics, and research mentors students through junior faculty members. She also co-directs the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) career development grant writing group. ICTR is the UW-Madison entity that fulfills and administers the university’s NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, or CTSA.
Dr. Bartels’ clinical interests include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), and reducing cardiovascular disease and disparities.

Dr. Bartels’ research program investigates how the collaboration by rheumatology/specialty teams affects management of modifiable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Dr. Bartels and her team design and study implementation of interventions to improve CVD health for patients who receive both specialty and primary care. She is also currently examining lupus outcomes related to “retention in care,” based upon a Centers for Disease Control/World Health Organization-endorsed model to reduce health disparities. As a rheumatologist and physician-scientist conducting health services research, she leads a research program with the long-term goal of improving cardiovascular health and reducing disparities for patients with rheumatic or other specialty conditions.
