Professional Activities

Dr. Craig S. Atwood is a faculty member in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology within the Department of Medicine and a Health Science Specialist in the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the William S. Middleton Veterans Administration Hospital. He is a widely acknowledged authority on the neuroendocrinology of aging and Alzheimer's disease and was a three-time Delegate to the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative. He has published over 300 scientific articles, is an inventor on nine issued U.S. patents, is a top cited author, serves on numerous review boards, and is an editor of more than 30 scientific journals.

Research Interests

Dr. Atwood has broad research interests related to the endocrinology of embryogenesis, adulthood and senescence. The current focus of research in his laboratory relates to basic and clinical investigations into developing strategies to restore hormonal balance to prevent or halt Alzheimer’s disease and restore cognitive functioning following a traumatic brain injury.
